Missing Keys June 25, 2009

Today, Millie and I ran a few errands. Our last two errands involved picking up Papa from work and going to the pet store. I drove to the pet store and after a brief run through all of the little pets we made our purchase and left. Chuck started to get Millie into the car and I mentioned that I would rather help her finish getting in if he would drive home (it’s becoming increasingly difficult for me to get out of the driver’s side of the car).

So I set our bird food, my purse, and keys on top of the car, helped Millie in, and quickly grabbed everything before sitting in the passenger seat. We ran home and made and ate lunch so Chuck could get back to school as soon as possible. Just then, I had a sinking suspicion… did I leave the keys on the trunk of the car? I let the question come and go as Millie and I got ready for our nap.

When 4:00 came around and Chuck called to be picked up (it is really hot and humid here today), I picked up my purse but I didn’t see my keys. I thought again about the parking lot, but I just couldn’t remember if I had set the keys on the car - and maybe left them there! That sinking feeling came back. I asked Millie if she saw the keys and she said “no, I don’t see them”. So, I grabbed the spare car key and went to pick up Chuck.

Chuck and I talked in the car and figured that if the keys were on the trunk they would have fallen off right away. The best bet would be to go back to the pet store to check it out. Then I decided to ask Millie one more question about the keys, “Did you put Mama’s keys somewhere?” And she answered, definitively, “Yes, they are under my cook sink.”

Chuck and I debated this new tidbit of information and decided to check it out before driving all the way back to the store. Chuck ran into the house and in a few seconds came running back out - keys in hand. It turns out they were under the sink in her cook stove, behind the little curtain. She couldn’t see them when I first asked - and said so - but did in fact know where they were located.

I guess I have a lot to learn when it comes to asking a toddler the right questions.
